Flying with kids can be hectic. While you can’t plan for everything, preparing as much as you can in advance increases the chances that you and your kids can get through the flight without any major meltdowns and with as little stress as possible. After all, vacations are supposed to be fun!

Use these tips to help make flying with your children easier and less stressful for you and for them:

Pack Light

If your kids are small, you may feel like you need to bring many changes of clothes for them in case of accidents. But that’s just going to make packing and travel more difficult. Back a few basic items that can be mixed and matched, and some spare socks and small items. Most destinations have washing machines available so you can wash any clothes that get soiled. Your children don’t need multiple outfits for each day.

Keep Essentials In The Carry On

Make sure that your child’s carry-on bag has essentials like a bottle of water, a sippy cup if they need one, any medications they need, tissue, extra diapers, their favorite stuffed animal, and any other things they might need during the flight or in the airport. That way, you’ll be able to easily access anything they need.

Stick To Their Normal Routine As Much As Possible

Kids thrive on routine, so travel that interrupts their usual routine can lead to tantrums and grumpy episodes. Try to stick to your child’s usual routine as much as you can during travel times. You can play games with them in the airport to keep them busy or entertained. Make sure they have meals at their usual times, and encourage them to take naps during their usual naptime.

Pack Snacks And Entertainment

The best way to make sure your child associates travel with fun is to pack plenty of their favorite snacks and games, music, and DVDs. Your child will think it’s great to be able to have snacks when they want, watch their favorite movies, or play games with you during the time in the airport and during the flight.

Give A Bottle During Takeoff And Landing

If your child is young, give them a bottle or breastfeed during the plane’s takeoff and landing. That will help your baby’s ears equalize the pressure that occurs during takeoff and landing so that their ears don’t hurt or feel uncomfortable.

Double Diaper During Travel

It’s a good idea to double diaper your child during travel because you may not always have a convenient or sanitary place to change their diaper. If your child is starting to potty train, use diapers during travel in case there is no child-friendly bathroom accessible during the trip
